That in Which Drives My CSS

Sleep Disorder: I don’t sleep restfully which makes me hurt all over and the pain causes me to be fatigued. The pain causes me to have even less restful sleep thus causing more pain and fatigue. A vicious cycle.

Food: As a blood type A all meats and dairy, plus many other foods, cause me to become very ill. Some just make me tired and dizzy while others leave me with symptoms similar to food poisoning and the stomach flu. See Digestive System.

Medications: All medications cause me to have severe side effects even herbs and oils. Chemicals found in cigarettes leave me very ill and caffeine (even in chocolate) increases chronic pain in the majority of sufferers not just myself except in the case of migraines. See Digestive System.

Stress: Stress can raise the magnitude of your pain and fatigue very quickly and very potently. If you live a stressful life you will notice it in your health. I have to live a stress free life as much as possible. Currently the only stressor in my life is my condition. Meditation, relaxation, stress management/coping and changing career/occupation are all ways to reduce stress. If I have anything come into my life that stresses me out it has to be removed immediately or I am risking nursing home placement which I am already on the verge of.

The Assumed Cause of My Central Sensitivity Syndrome

My condition is assumed to be caused by congenital exposure to a concentrated dosage of Dioxin. Dioxin is a mutagen in which it mutates DNA in my case causing severe sensitivity issues with all aspects of my body and mind. As a result of this hypersensitivity my sleep is immediately affected in which leads to pain and fatigue along with many other symptoms. Dioxin is an herbicide. The mutation that took place may have been the mutation of genetic disorders that run in the women in my family such as sleep disorders and FMS/CFS.

Therapies to Consider

  • Myofascial Release Therapy - Utilizes gentle, kneading manipulation that softly stretches, softens, lengthens and realigns fascia. After careful observation of ones posture, a myofascial release therapist will feel for stressed areas of the body. When restricted areas are found, the myofascial release therapist will gently stretch tissues found along the direction of the muscle fibers. This stretch is held for a couple of minutes until a softening or release is felt. These stretches are repeated until the tension is felt no more. A myofascial release session may last up to an hour and can be administered one to three times per week depending on a patient's condition. Source: holisticjunction.com. I have tried and still have this form of therapy any time I have a flare up. It works wonderfully, but fades after a couple days. If you get your doctor to refer you to a physical therapist that does Myofascial Therapy your insurance should cover it. If you see a therapist who only works in body work that is not a physical therapist your insurance will not pay.
  • Exercise - Includes physical actions that use repetitive motion of large muscle groups to improve physical fitness. Often, "exercise" is structured by the amount of time, intensity and type of activity. Aerobic exercise, strength training and flexibility training are key elements of a well-rounded fitness program. When choosing activities, be mindful of your physical limitations and make adjustments to suit your needs. There are many ways to do this, including reducing the intensity of a movement. Source: Chronic Pain & Fatigue Research Center MI. I myself work out every single morning 30 minute to one hour. See a Physical Therapist if you need help finding and exercise routine that will not cause you more pain in the long run by over doing it.
  • Weight Loss – The best thing you can do for yourself if you have chronic pain and or fatigue is to loose weight. If you could stand to shed a few pounds or allot this change will help you greatly. I myself lost sixty-five pounds with a healthy diet and exercise and of course determination.
  • Heating Pads – Whether microwaveable gel packs or the heating pads you plug in these little gadgets are miracle workers. Use them when you wake up any where that is in pain or the muscle is tight. Also use it at night but avoid the neck if you notice you are having more vivid dreams and less restful sleep. The stimulation of that part of the brain/spine with heat can trigger these effects. If heating pads just don’t seem to work with all the areas you have pain and tightness try a hot shower or bath instead.
  • Stretching – Is the best thing to do first thing in the morning. If your muscles are tight its best to stretch them rather then pull them later of course. A Physical Therapist can lead you through and tell you what stretches would be best for you.
  • Alpha Stim - Both the Alpha-Stim 100 and Alpha-Stim SCS (Stress Control System) treat anxiety, depression and insomnia. The Alpha-Stim 100 also treats acute, chronic, and postoperative pain and the Alpha-Stim PP (Personal Pain Manager) is designed as an alternative to TENS for localized treatment of pain. The primary distinctive feature in a medical device is the waveform, and Alpha-Stim has a uniquely effective waveform. The application of direct electrical treatment to the brain, along with our treatment protocols for pain also makes the difference that no other device has been able to emulate. Source: Alpha-stim.com. This little micro-current device has preformed miracles for many, but for me I only became more disorientated and mentally fatigued so I sold it on eBay.
  • TENS Unit - "TENS" is the acronym for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. A "TENS unit" is a pocket size, portable, battery-operated device that sends electrical impulses to certain parts of the body to block pain signals. The electrical currents produced are mild, but can prevent pain messages from being transmitted to the brain and may raise the level of endorphins (natural pain killers produced by the brain). Source: About.com. My mother loved the TENS unit, she has FMS,  but I’m far to sensitive and it causes me nothing but sheer agonizing pain. I am very sensitive to electricity even remote currents.
  • Cold Packs – If heat doesn’t do the trick your pain might be inflammatory. Gel packs that you put in the fridge are the best I have used.
  • Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide – I introduced this idea to my chronic pain doctor back in 2002. I was on it for a full year. This drug does have side effects in the way of disorientation, hallucinations and unwanted numbness such as in the lips which can slur speech a little. This drug is the ONLY drug that has ever relieved my nerve pain. This drug takes all of my pain away, but in the long run the mental side effects were not worth it. I would rather remain in pain and independent then drugged and in a nursing home. This drug raises the pain threshold in the Medulla Oblongata (a part of the brain) which has seven major cranial nerves running through it. The pain threshold in the cranial nerves is raised as well and that tolerance for pain passing down throughout the body. This drug does not require a prescription for it is OTC. The form I took it in is called Dexalone. Dexalone comes in 30mg capsules. I recommend taking no more then 2 to start and work up from there. If you take to may at once you will not be able to deal with the severity of the mental side effects. Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide or DXM does have similar side effects on higher dosages as LSD or Peyote. My dosage was around 150mg twice a day. Once in the morning and once at night. DXM has no known serious or harmful side effects. I have never met another person who has had their doctor request they try this medication and mine would not have if I had not explained how it worked and proved beyond any doubt it worked. I do know many others who take this medication for chronic pain under their own care and not the care of a physician. This drug took me off of a cane and I was not only able to walk, but jog.
  • Guaifenesin - Dr. R. Paul St. Amand believes that FMS is caused by an abnormality in phosphate excretion, which may be due to a. genetic defect. Retention of phosphates eventually interferes with energy formation in affected cells. Guaifenesin (guai) treatment flushes metabolic debris out of the body, and while this occurs, your pain will probably increase temporarily. His treatment is designed to restore energy production by releasing the body from a biochemical blockade. He believes that FMS is caused by the retention of a biochemical substance within the cells themselves–a metabolic malfunction that results in an inability to produce energy. Source: Sover.net/~devstar/phguai.htm. This drug personally did not work for me, but I do know many who in which this drug does help. While this drug is a cousin of DXM it does not have the mental side effects, but does not affect nerve pain either from my experience.
  • Remove Caffeine & Artificial Sweeteners – Caffeine is one of the first thing chronic pain doctors tell you to remove from your diet because it stimulates muscles in a way that causes pain and fatigue. There have also been people with chronic pain that were misdiagnosed with a chronic pain condition such as Multiple Sclerosis when the culprit was actually artificial sweeteners. Try removing foods with artificial sweeteners especially containing Splenda. Soda/pop can be a cause of chronic pain because they have artificial sweeteners.
  • Flexeril – While I do not advocate sleep medications because they can leave you groggier the next day then before you went on it, Flexeril is not a sleep medication rather it’s a muscle relaxer. Flexeril is more of a “Mental Muscle Relaxer” in that for most people it calms and quiets the mind so you can rest longer and more efficiently. I take this medication off and on through out the year on nights I just can’t get to sleep. My mother uses it as well and she has FMS/CFS.
  • Klonopin - "In sleep management, one of the best things we have found is Klonopin," states Charles W. Lapp, M.D. Klonopin can help you get to sleep fast and sleep longer and thus have less fatigue the next day. It also is a muscle relaxant that can help with restless leg syndrome and, as it is closely related to Valium, can relieve anxiety and panic attacks. Klonopin is not without drawbacks though, since it can be addictive, and thus if you need to discontinue its use, you must carefully taper it under a doctor's care. Also as with many sedatives one can build up tolerance to Klonopin's effects, thus reducing its benefit. Source: Immunesupport.com. This drug is the only reason my mother can dream finally. Source: Trivita.com.
  • Vitamin B Deficiency - Many people with chronic fatigue and fibromylagia have found allot of help with Vitamin B supplements. Vitamin B deficancies can cause severe pain and fatigue. I suggest what has worked for freinds, the very best, Trivita's 2-Step Energy System. This system provides over 100% of the RDI for B-12, B-6, and Folic Acid. I have seen this system start to work as early as 3 days.
  • Energized Water - Ley-line water sources, similar to Lourdes, have been used as healing spas throughout Europe for ages. Here you can learn how to charge your own water with the same negative polarities for an exact simulation of these of healing spas for your drinking pleasure. Such energized water aides in tissues regeneration and the healing of FMS, CFS, CSS and like conditions. Source: No Longer Available Online.
  • Multiple Chemical Sensitivity – Allergist - Have pain, fatigue and it seems to get worse 30 to 40 minutes after eating? You may have MCS and should find an Allergist near you who deals with MCS. Try a 100% organic diet for two weeks, if you feel better you may very well have MCS. I speak from experience and though much of the damage has already been done to me, you may be able to improve your health dramatically. Also read the book “Eat Right 4 Your Blood Type”.

  • Psychological Counseling - If medications and psychiatry aren’t working for you try seeing a psychologist instead. They do not work with medications and try to get to the root of problems and help you with coping skills. Coping skills they can help you with include, stress, pain, fatigue, depression, anxiety and more.
  • My Mental Cure Alls – In 2002 I scored 50 on a depression test, the highest for that clinic ever was 30. In 2005 I scored a 2. Yes, a “2”. To keep depression at bay you need to change your perspective on life. Tell yourself what you need to (within reason) to get through. Stay close to your family and friends and if you have trouble meeting new friends start looking up old ones to catch up with. If you’re homebound depression can set in quick from a lack of visual stimulation. Decorate your home with vivid colors and many different shapes and textures. Use colors you love and that make you feel vibrant and alive. And above all Laugh, Laugh and Laugh some more. In 2002 I was diagnosed with Agoraphobia. In 2007 I was retested and was told I manage anxiety better then the average person. Be as social as you possibly can. Force yourself to talk to anyone who comes your way. Call up old friends and keep in regular touch with family. Desensitize yourself from your biggest fear and know that your mind is stronger then the anxiety.
  • Endorphins – If you can not take medications due to sensitivities then try taking up a good exercise routine in the mornings and right before bed. If working out at night keeps you awake, just stick to the mornings. Endorphins are released when you work out and they are the body’s natural pain killers.
  • Aleve – If Advil or Ibuprofen just aren’t cutting it anymore try Aleve. This is my miracle worker. If you have a sensitive stomach you may want to avoid all of these drugs period or only take them when you really need. This will prevent stomach/liver irritation and or damage.
  • Acupressure & Acupuncture – “Chronic pain’s true cause, says Dr. Flowers, is a disruption of the body’s energy system caused by stored trauma, unhappy memories, or toxic emotions. Gentle fingertip tapping on key acupuncture points combined with focused thought corrects the disruption, allows energy to flow normally, and alleviates symptoms all at the same time.” Source: Newstarget.com. This has worked wonders for my. While I do not have it done professionally I have learned professional techniques in which I use daily and help very, very much.
